Effingham, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- Unemployment in the area is up from where it was at this time a year ago.
In the monthly report from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, it says the unemployment for Effingham County was at 3.9%. That is up from 3% in March of 2023. As for area counties, Fayette County for the month of March was 5.3% unemployment in March. That is up from 4.9% in March of last year. Bond County was at 4.6% unemployment in March and that is up from 3.9% in March of last year. Clay County unemployment is at 5.6% in March, up from 5.3% in March of one year ago.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says that total employment gains in the area were in the Professional-Business Services, Government, Leisure-Hospitality and Trade-Transportation-Utilities. Job losses were seen in the segments of Private Education-Health Services, Manufacturing and Construction.
