Cumberland got off to a hot start, scoring on their first play, and never looked back, getting their first win of the season over Sangamon Valley 41-6.
Cumberland got the ball to start the game and on the very first play Blake McMechan took the hand off and ran the ball 55 yards untouched to give Cumberland the 7-0 lead just :17 into the game. The Cumberland defense would then make a stand on 4th down to force a turnover on the next drive, however Cumberland would fumble the ball deep in their own territory to set Sangamon Valley up with good field position. Once again the Cumberland defense made a stand and stopped a fourth down play to get Cumberland the ball back. Cumberland would then drive the ball down to the goal line where Ty Bradley would pound the ball in to give Cumberland the 14-0 lead with 1:12 left in the first quarter. The Cumberland offense would then strike again early in the second quarter with a beautiful 23 yard touchdown pass from Bryant Weber to Maddox McElravy to put Cumberland up 21-0. Weber would connect again on a touchdown pass, this time a diving catch by Trevin Magee from 15 yards out to put Cumberland up 28-0 at the half.
Cumberland would keep the scoring going in the third quarter with a Weber to McMechan 13 yard touchdown pass with 8:40 left in the third quarter. Cumberland’s final score of the game came with 1:29 left in the third quarter as Weber would run it up the middle for a 1 yard touchdown, that put Cumberland up 41-0. Sangamon Valley would score with :21 second left in the game on a 4 yard run by Mason Hardy but Cumberland would block the extra point to make the final score 41-6.
The Cumberland offense was moving the ball well for the first time this season and the defense played tough all game long. Cumberland would force 4 fumbles on the night and would only give up 7 first downs on the night.
Cumberland is now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play will have a tough matchup next Friday night when they host 2-1 ALAH, who defeated Villa Grove on Friday 35-18.
