Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- A skin fungus that causes ringworm and doesn’t respond to standard treatment is spreading to more countries every year. That’s according to a new study from the CDC.
Ringworm is a common fungal infection that spreads through skin-to-skin contact and contaminated items, and causes a circular rash on the skin. That fungus can also lead to infections including athlete’s foot. Researchers looked at data between 2022 and 2025 and found that cases of the fungus tripled during that period.
The first U.S. case was reported in 2023 and has now been identified in 29 countries, with most cases in Europe.
