Altamont traveled to Dieterich on Friday night for an important NTC game and Altamont came back from a double digit deficit to defeat the Movin Maroons 52-47. The cliché of tale of two halves couldn’t be more appropriate for this one.
Dieterich started off red hot from beyond the arc going 4 for 7 with Andrew Lidy hitting a pair, Lucas Westendorf and Caleb Gephart each hitting one. While on the other side the Indians couldn’t get anything going, looking out of sync from the get-go going 0-7 from three and 2 for 17 from the field. Eric Kollmann would score all of Altamont’s points in the quarter. Movin Maroons led 16-5 after the first quarter.
Dieterich would continue their hot shooting in the second quarter going on a 7-2 to start the quarter. Coach Niebrugge had to call a time out with Altamont trailing 23-7. Gephart would hit another pair of threes and Avery Jahraus would hit a three to finally get the Indians on the board from deep. Though it was the only made three of the half. The Maroons finished 6 for 11 while Altamont went 1 for 13 from deep. Dieterich was outstanding on defense holding Altamont top two scorers Noah Klimpel and Mason Robinson scoreless in the half and Maroons would have a 26-12.
Then the second half happened. Altamont came storming back with Dieterich coughing up the basketball. Robinson hit a couple from deep and Klimpel would finally get on the board. On Robinson’s second three, that tied the game up but Dieterich would score before the quarter could close. Altamont would only trail 30-28.
Altamont would complete the comeback going 13 for 16 from the free throw line, mainly coming from Robinson driving to the rim and not settling for threes. Kollmann would also get some important put backs as well. Bryce Budde and Westendorf would hit some threes but ultimately Altamont completed the come back going home with a 52-47 win.
Altamont improves to 12-4 on the season and 2-0 in the NTC. Quick turnaround for the Indians as they will be back in action on Saturday against Woodlawn. With the Lady Indians tipping off with a varsity only contest at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shorted boy JV contest, then the boys varsity will close out the day.
Dieterich falls to 10-5 and 2-3 in the NTC. Maroons also have a quick turnaround in the North Clay Shootout on Saturday as well.
