The state’s smoking policy was among the key items discussed at a recent Effingham County Health Committee meeting. Committee Vice-Chairman Rob Arnold called the “Smoke-Free Illinois” Act vague, making it’s enforcement unclear at times. Arnold though noted that individual county’s have the ability to add their own regulations and wording to the law. The Committee discussed the possibility of making amendments to the policy for Effingham County to more clearly define what is and isn’t allowed within the act. The Act prohibits smoking in many public places. Restaurants and bars were among the most effected by the law, which led many of them expanding to create outdoor smoking areas. The committee commented that restaurants that made changes to adapt to the state’s smoking rules would likely need to be grandfathered in if any charges are made.
