On Wednesday night Altamont inched one step closer to their goal of a holiday tournament trophy. Altamont got there by winning 72-57 over DuQuoin in the semi finals of the Sesser Holiday Tournament.
If you want to compare this game to the previous two nights, the game started out a little like Monday’s game. DuQuoin came out and took the lead 5-2. Altamont came back with a 4-0 run to take the lead 6-5, on an Avery Jahraus basket and foul. Altamont after the first few minutes would never let go of the lead. Another balanced scoring effort with six players getting in the scoring column, got Altamont out to a double digit 23-13 lead after one.
Altamont would ramp up the defensive pressure and also benefit from DuQuion having a hard time getting anything to fall. DuQuoin were also in foul trouble as well. A couple of three point baskets by Logan Cornett would extend the lead to 20 by the half, 40-20.
DuQuoin came out strong in the second half determined to get back into the game. Malik Jones almost single handedly tried to bring the Indians back scoring ten in the quarter alone. Altamont also turned the ball over quite a bit eight turnovers in the quarter. With outlet passes that were connecting in the first half, just were not there in the third. DuQuoin would climb their way back into it trailing only by nine, but it was Wyatt Phillips who helped end the quarter with bang and recapturing the momentum for Altamont. Phillips scores a two point basket then next possession taking advantage of a turnover. With a feed from Cornett, Phillips would make a three pointer at the buzzer to give Altamont the lead 62-45 after three.
From there Phillips would make another three at the beginning of the fourth and with free throws from Cornett and Eric Kollmann would close out the game and Altamont goes on to win 72-57.
Altamont improves to 9-3 and 3-0 in the tournament. Altamont will advance to the championship to take on the 5th Seed Blackcats of Goreville. Goreville advanced to the finals by taking down the 1 Seed Sparta 68-67.
Game time for the championship will be 7:00 P.M.
DuQuion falls to 6-6 and will fall to the 3rd Place game against Sparta.
