Cumberland had two goals to accomplish on Friday and it may have been a little rocky at times but Cumberland accomplished the first of those two goals with a 34-15 win against Cerro Gordo.
Cumberland got out to a hot start scoring with 11:31 left in the first quarter with a 42 yard pass from Bryant Webber to Blake McMechan. Cerro Gordo would drive down the field on their first drive but the Pirates defense would force a turnover on downs. Cumberland would then score two more times before the end of the half to lead 21-0 at the half.
However the second half was a different story for the Pirates. Cumberland would score with 7:27 left in the third quarter but Cumberland had multiple penalties in the second half that kept Cerro Gordo drives alive. Cumberland would get an interception in the second half but on their first play Cumberland would fumble the football. Cerro Gordo would get on the board with a safety in the fourth quarter. Cerro Gordo would then score 13 straight points to end the game.
Cumberland got the win but if momentum means anything the Pirates need to figure out what happened in the second half of that game and fix it. As said in the post game Cumberland was the least happy Conference champion that we have seen. There wasn’t much celebrating for Cumberland.
Cumberland will finish the regular season with a 7 game win streak and a final record of 7-2. Cumberland will be in the playoffs and they will find out who they face on Saturday.
