Fayette County, IL-(Effingham Radio)- As part of the requirements of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) a voters registration card is being mailed to you, during the month of July, 2023, at your last known address of record.
If you do not receive a card and believe that you are currently an active voter of Fayette County kindly contact my office to confirm your registration status.
If you receive a card and any of the following information is incorrect kindly complete the reverse side of your card and return to my office:
- Spelling of your name
- Complete address and/or complete mailing address
- Township/Precinct you reside in
- Voting/Taxing Districts you reside in
Any voter registration cards returned to the county clerk’s office undelivered by the USPS will result in the issuance of an R-26 confirmation letter to the voter. If the R-26 is also returned to the county clerk’s office by the USPS it will result in the voter’s registration being cancelled.
WHY DO ELECTION OFFICIALS CANCEL VOTERS?
As mandated by the Federal Help America Vote Act, Election Officials are required to purge certain voters from the county’s voter rolls every two years. The purge sometimes has a negative connotation. It shouldn’t. It’s basically a county-wide voter address confirmation mailing. The Voter Registration Purge is a way for counties to keep their voter databases as updated as possible. This is done by mailing every active voter in Fayette County a new Voter ID card. Think of it as it relates to your home office or business filing cabinet. You only have so much room. You know there are files there for business contacts or personal contacts who are no longer in business, have moved, and sadly have even died. Every two years you tell yourself you MUST clean out all of your old files or you will simply run out of room in your house. Thus, Election Officials do a “purge” every two years.
If you have moved without notifying us, the Voter ID card will be sent back to our office by the Post Office as this type of mail cannot be forwarded. If there is a forwarding address on the returned card, we will also send a Confirmation Letter to this new address. Please fill out and return the Confirmation Letter with the correct information, if your address is within Fayette County, an updated Voter ID card will be mailed back.
If a forwarding address on the returned card is out of our jurisdiction, we will cancel your registration. If you do not reply to the Confirmation Letter, do not update your address within our jurisdiction and do not vote for two General Elections, you will be cancelled in our system.
We have about 13,000 registered voters in Fayette County, so this is a very necessary project to keep our voter registration database accurate and up-to-date!
If you are a registered voter anywhere in Fayette County and live at the current address we have on file, you can expect to receive a new Voter ID card from us very soon!
Thank you for being an active constituent within your community!
