Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Effingham City Council members voiced support Tuesday for the city’s proposed acquisition of the Thelma Keller Convention Center.
Under the plan, the city would own the facility, while operations would be leased back to a new hotel owner. Final paperwork is still pending, but all five council members indicated support, with a formal vote expected soon. Commissioner Jake Niebrugge said most convention centers are municipally owned, and Commissioner Hank Stephens said the move “makes all the sense in the world.”
In other action, the council learned bids for the next phase of Evergreen Avenue reconstruction, from Sherwood Park to Oceola Street, will be opened September 29th. Members also awarded Feutz Contractors of Paris a nearly $652,000 contract to rebuild Cherry Street from Jefferson to Fayette.
The council approved a solar project west of J&R Collision Center, a $159k property sale tied to John Boos and Company’s expansion, and permission for Unit 40’s Homecoming Parade Sunday afternoon.
