Breese Mater Dei came out strong in the first quarter scoring 21 points to take the 27-13 win against Effingham.
Effingham was able to stop Breese on a fourth down attampt but couldn’t get their offense going and were forced to punt. Breese was able to connect on a 10 yard pass and a quarterback run for 33 yards to begin their drive. After three more carries Breese was in the endzone on a Theising 2-yard run with 6:29 left in the first quarter.
Effingham drove into Breese territory after a 47 yard carry by Terrence Hill however Effingham couldn’t convert on a fourth down giving Breese the ball back deep in their own territory. The field position didn’t matter however as Jake Timmermann was able to break free for a 91 yard touchdown run, making it 14-0 with 1:56 left in the first quarter.
Mater Dei would recover the kickoff on Effingham’s 28 yard line and would score again on a 22 yard quarterback run to make it 21-0 with 53.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Effingham’s defense would step up in the second quarter to keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Effingham themselves finally found the end zone with 1:43 left in the half on a Hill 1 yard touchdown run.
Effingham was able to score again in the fourth quarter on a Hill 6 yard run, Effingham failed on the PAT making it 21-13.
Breese was able to put a long drive together late in the fourth quarter that ended on a 21 yard touchdown pass to make it 28-13 with 2:26 left to go in the game. Breese was able to hold on for the win.
Vasquez and Wolfe split quarterback duties for the game. Vasquez was 2 for 6 for 42 yards. Wolfe was 3 for 15 for 61 yards and a fourth quarter interception.
On the ground, Hill carried the ball 30 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
Effingham will head to Jerseyville next week. Jerseyville got a win Friday night against Granite City 39-35. That game can be heard on 105.5 and 100.5 Jack FM at 7 with pre game starting at 6:45.
