Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Illinois Department of Transportation announces an 11.7-mile resurfacing project on U.S. 50, from approximately 1.5 miles east of the Clay County/Richland County line to a half-mile west of the St. Marie Road just outside of Olney, beginning April 3. Included within this area is the reconstruction of the intersection of U.S. 50 and Illinois 130. U.S. 50 at the Walmart distribution center entrance, located between County Road 900E and North Elmdale Road, will also be reconstructed.
One lane of traffic will be maintained on U.S. 50 in each direction during the project with flaggers helping to maintain traffic control. The north leg of the Illinois 130/U.S. 50 intersection to Clem Street will be closed for two weeks. More information will be released once a date is determined for the closure of Illinois 130. Benefits for the public from this project include a smoother driving surface and safer intersections. The project is expected to be completed by Nov. 30.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 2,500 miles of highway and nearly 10 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Three of Rebuild Illinois included approximately $8.6 billion of improvements statewide on 4,422 miles of highway, 412 bridges, and 621 additional safety improvements.
