Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Two representatives gave details about how federal funding is available to help the Effingham and surrounding communities get everyone access to high speed broadband internet at affordable prices.
The funding is part of a 5-year grant program that will work with local officials and look at the best way to expand and help local internet providers provide high speed options to everyone. Part of the program requires that there be an income based option, so everyone can have access to internet regardless of income. An informational meeting will be held on March 22nd from 6-7 PM at the Effingham County University of Illinois Extension Office at 1209 North Wenthe Drive in Effingham. You can also email questions to broadband@illinois.gov.
The Council also heard from Tourism Director Jodi Thoele regarding replacement of old Christmas light displays, and granted funding to acquire more lights for the winter season. They also discussed details on an agreement for services at the Effingham Water Treatment Plant, and City Administrator Steve Miller stated that $1.7 million in ARPA funds could be designated for city police and fire services. The updates to the City website could be coming soon as well, as they announced that March 20th is when the work should begin on the transition to the updated website. The Fire Department will also be conducting checks for smoke detectors to see if they are up-to-date after the time change this weekend.
During the Tuesday meeting, Council members also approved:
- Agreement with TextMyGov for texting communication services
- Agreement with Sarah Bush Lincoln Bonutti Clinic for pre-employment and in-service physical testing services
- Special use permit so El Shaddai Homes can operate a pregnancy center at 505 West Temple Avenue
- Liquor license for The Local Sports Bar and Grill on North Keller Drive
- Plat for Oak Point Subdivision to be a residential development along Lake Pauline
Council Member Hank Stephens was not present at this meeting.
