It was a chilly, windy, and rainy night but it was the perfect weather for the Hearts to come out with the win and become playoff eligible.
After both teams punted and turned it over on downs, Mater Dei had the ball near midfield and running back Drake Rensing had the ball poked loose and fumbled the ball. Effingham would take advantage of the turnover and it took eight plays, traveling 52 yards, and it was finished off by a short yardage run by Weldon Dunston to give the Hearts the early lead.
Effingham would get the ball back towards the end of the 1st quarter and would go on a clock eating 11 play drive. Only to see the Hearts get in field goal range but unfortunately for Armando Estrada he would miss the 34 yard kick. Estrada would have another opportunity to redeem himself later in the game. The Hearts would eventually get on the scoreboard again with a 14 yard scramble run by Tanner Pontious to make the score 14-0 at the half.
Neither team would find the scoreboard in the third quarter as both teams traded punts. Speaking of the redemption for Estrada. Armando would finish off a 13 play drive to nail a 21 yard field goal to break a school record for most field goals in a single season with 5 (so far). An Evan Waymouth interception off a tipped pass would pretty much seal the game. Effingham would go on to win by that score of 17-0 to win on senior night.
Effingham gets that to the magic number of wins of 5 to become playoff eligible. However 5 doesn’t guarantee an automatic playoff berth but the Hearts should have enough playoff points to make the field. Effingham improves to 5-3 on the season and faces off against state ranked and 7-1 Highland.
Mater Dei is in a must win situation as they fall to 4-4 on the season and takes on Mt. Zion next week and the Braves suffered a upset 30-27 loss to Charleston on Friday night.
