Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Effingham City Council spent a significant portion of Tuesday’s meeting discussing the rising workload created by Freedom of Information Act requests, and whether the City should add an employee specifically to handle them. Police Chief Kurt Davis, police staffer Sandi Rich, City Clerk Abbey Nosbisch, and City Attorney Tracy Willenborg outlined the growing volume and complexity of requests. Mayor Mike Schutzbach said the number is far higher than what he dealt with as police chief, with the SAFE-T Act and other legislation contributing to the increase. City Administrator Steve Miller said the issue was held for review during budget talks, but requests have since “exploded.” Commissioner Hank Stephens called the information “eye-opening.”
The council also stayed with Ameren after rejecting electricity supply bids, approved a $3.29 million Airport Road project, rezoned nearby land for development, honored two 15-year employees, and appointed Jon Zerkel to the Plan Commission.
