Shelby County State’s Attorney Nichole Kroncke announced that on December 6th Chad Hammond, 50, of Shelbyville was charged with the following offenses:
- Aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude police officers with a prior conviction (3 counts) (Class 3 felony with 2-5 year sentencing range)
- Unlawful possession of methamphetamine with prior conviction (Class 3 felony with 20-10 year sentencing range)
- Driving while license revoked with 8 prior convictions (Class 4 felony with 1-3 year sentencing range)
- Aggravated assault (Class 4 felony with 1-3 year sentencing range)
- Criminal damage to government supported property (Class 3 felony with 2-5 year sentencing range)
The charges allege that on December 6th Hammond fled or attempted to elude Deputy Brennan Atkinson, driving at a rate of speed at least 21 MPH over posted speed limits, causing over $300 in damages to property, and disobeying two or more official traffic control devices, having previously been convicted of the same offense in a 2019 Shelby County case. Further, Hammond allegedly possessed <5g of meth, having previously been convicted of unlawful possession of meth in a 2019 Shelby County case. Further, it is alleged that Hammond drove a motor vehicle with a revoked driver’s license, having 8 prior convictions for driving on a revoked license. Additionally, Hammond allegedly assaulted Deputy Brennan Atkinson, knowing him to a police officer performing his official duties, by driving his motor vehicle toward Deputy Atkinson, placing him in reasonable belief of receiving battery. It is also alleged that Hammond knowingly damaged a Shelby County Sheriff’s squad car, causing damages in excess of $500 but not exceeding $10k.
The case was investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The pending charges are merely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
