On Friday evening Effingham traveled to Mahomet to take on another set of Bulldogs and unfortunately for the Hearts they are still searching for their first win of the season. On the bright side Effingham did find something they were looking for the endzone but more on that later.
After the two teams traded punts, Mahomet would run 11 plays in three minutes and find the endzone on a 27 yard screen pass from Wyatt Bohm to Quinton Rodgers and with the extra point it was 7-0. Effingham would have a turnover on downs, Mahomet would get the ball back and score quickly again and it was another long TD throw from Boehm to Valient Walsh to make it 14-0.
Effingham would have some tough breaks in the 2nd quarter as Mahomet running back Luke Johnson lost the ball and Effingham recovered. Only for the Hearts to pick up a first down but have to punt it away again. Mahomet would get the ball back but they had trouble going in a positive direction and were forced to line up to punt. Before Bohm could punt it away, Chris Hemwell would come in for the block, the Hearts second punt of the night. That would set up the Hearts in the best field position they had at that point only to fumble it away literally and figuratively. Four plays later Bohm would connect with Walsh on another screen play to make it 21-0 at the half.
Mahomet would get in the endzone another time in the third to make it 28-0. Then it finally happened.
Effingham would finally get on the scoreboard first the first time this season with a 16 yard touchdown run from Weldon Dunston.
Mahomet would put the game away early in the fourth quarter as another screen pass went to Rodgers and he did the resting running in from 62 yards to make it 35-7. Effingham would get on the scoreboard again this time thru the air, as Pontious rolled out and the ball was tipped right in the hands of Jacob Weaver to make it the final score of 35-14.
Mahomet improves to 2-0 and will take on Mt. Zion next week .
Effingham falls to 0-2 and will come back home and take on Charleston for Military Appreciation night.
