
Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded Sunday evening to a reported shots–fired incident in rural Mason. An investigation determined that no firearm had been discharged.
At approximately 7:08pm, on October 4, 2026, Deputies were dispatched after a caller reported being struck in the head and shot at during an argument on 1100th Street, in rural Mason.
Officers from the Effingham Police Department, Watson Fire Protection, Rural Med EMS, Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Natural Resources assisted ECSO Deputies. A drone was deployed to survey the area. During the response, five people at a nearby property were temporarily detained after officers observed activity that raised concern about a possible weapon. They were released after officers determined they were unarmed and not involved in the reported altercation.
Deputies later located and detained two people connected to the incident without further incident. Investigators determined that the confrontation arose from a dispute involving a side–by–side ATV on a family farm. Based on statements and evidence gathered at the scene, two individuals got into a physical altercation, neither individual was seriously injured.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated the injured person at the scene. The person was not transported to a hospital.
Investigators determined that the reported weapon was a pepper–ball gun and that no firearm had been fired at anyone. The incident was determined to be mutual confrontation, and no arrests have been made at this time.
