Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Effingham City Council members heard two funding requests at Tuesday’s meeting.
Norma Lansing and Lake Land College President Josh Bullock asked the city to commit 50-thousand dollars per year for the next three years to support CORE Academy. The program provides career-focused instruction for students from more than a dozen area high schools and is based at the Effingham Technology Center, owned by Lake Land College.
Council members also heard from Effingham Regional Growth Alliance President and CEO Courtney Yockey, who requested a 110-thousand-dollar city contribution for the coming year.
Both requests are expected to come up for action at a future meeting.
Meanwhile, Effingham city officials are continuing oversight of Village Square Mall as the legal dispute surrounding the property could still move forward.
The redevelopment group Square Southtown has ended its effort to revamp the mall, citing declining tenant interest and the building’s continued aging. Under the agreement, the City has now purchased the property.
The City has prevailed twice in court, and a motion to reconsider from the former mall owner was denied. That owner has until July 17 to seek an appeal before the Illinois Supreme Court.
City Administrator Steve Miller says work continues on life safety issues, restroom and HVAC improvements, and cleanup.
The council also honored City Planner Greg Koester as City Employee of the Year.
