
Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham City Council discussed numerous advancements for the community this week. Director of Public Works Jeremy Heuerman presented a solar project to be built on 1.5 acres near the water treatment plant, with an energy production goal set for late 2027 and projected savings of $1 million over 30 years. The Council approved Fire Chief Brant Yochum’s request to pursue a new aerial ladder truck, replacing a 25-year-old vehicle, also scheduled for completion around 2027.
City Engineer Luke Thoele received authorization to continue a large water main improvement associated with the Fayette Avenue reconstruction. Exciting recreational news came from developers planning Looper’s Golf Lounge with four golf bays and a virtual course experience.
Leaders from Effingham Event Center sought city assistance for a $600,000 parking lot and lighting upgrade, receiving praise and consideration from officials. Thanks to favorable bids, sidewalk replacement will grow by nearly 50%.
The Council honored 17 Citizens Police Academy graduates and voted to ban kratom and 7-OH product sales, citing FDA concerns. Additionally, they ratified a pay-increase contract with the firefighters’ union, approved a new subdivision plat, and moved forward on raw water line project funding.
Commissioner Hank Stephens joined remotely; Commissioner Jake Niebrugge was absent.
