Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Effingham City Council has selected Sasha Althoff as the city’s new economic development director, succeeding Todd Hull. Althoff, a veteran of the economic development office, was unanimously approved after Councilman Jake Niebrugge expressed enthusiasm for her ideas.
Council members prohibited parking along Lawrence Avenue’s south side bordering Bliss Park, aiming to improve traffic flow after new playground equipment was installed. Regulation changes for vacation and short-term property rentals passed narrowly; Mayor Mike Schutzbach opposed any such rentals in town.
Other votes included $30,000 for Rotary’s Fourth of July fireworks in honor of America’s 250th birthday, $25,000 for the City/County Committee on Aging, and funding for sidewalk, water main, and resurfacing projects. The council is also considering a full ban on Kratom sales after reports of thefts, seeking to tighten local drug regulations.
