Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham County Board approved a range of funding measures and community initiatives at Monday’s meeting.
The Mill Road Threshermans Association received $9K in hotel and motel tax funds for its annual September event at the county fairgrounds, with organizers noting the later date is popular among participants. The More 4 Montrose event—featuring a rodeo and live music in June—was awarded $1K. The Board also okayed arming certain probation department staff who conduct home visits, following a recommendation from the Chief Judge.
National Police Week was proclaimed for May 10-16, while Law Day is recognized on May 7. Board member Norbert Soltwedel received up to $5K to attend a national conference in New Orleans and participate in electing a fellow Illinois official to national office, although he said he won’t use that much so he shouldn’t need the full reimbursement. Economic development funds totaling $12,000 were allocated to Bodyworks Massage Health and Wellness, and $500 was granted to Effingham Sunrise Rotary for the upcoming America’s 250th Anniversary celebration, including flag displays through year’s end.
Several fire district trustees and ethics board members were appointed. Infrastructure projects were advanced, with bridge aid petitions approved for multiple townships and plans to bid for a new highway department dump truck. The Board also authorized use of the courthouse lawn for community events, such as an outdoor movie benefitting the Heart Theatre project and a patriot garden installation.
An intergovernmental agreement was approved with the City of Effingham for resurfacing a county office building parking lot. Rick Manford resigned from the Ambulance Oversight Committee, and preliminary work on a new ambulance contract is underway as the current agreement nears expiration.
The county welcomed Nick Burrus as assistant engineer and encouraged high school students interested in Law Day to contact their counselors by Friday. Lastly, the Board voted to join the Opioid Settlement as a plaintiff.
Sandi Rich was absent from this meeting.
