Homecoming is always better when you win and that’s exactly what Effingham did on Friday Night. The Hearts lead was down to just two points in the 2nd quarter but had an avalanche of points to go on to win 55-12.
Effingham got off to a great start scoring on their first two possessions. The Hearts finished off a ten play 65 yards drive, with a 18 yard touchdown rushing from Weldon Dunston. Taylorville would go on a long double digit drive of their own, just to be halted short of the end zone. The Tornadoes did attempt a field goal, however they would miss the 23 yard attempt.
The action would pick up with about two minutes to go in the first quarter. The Hearts got on the board again, a 51 yard touchdown pass from Gaige Gillum to Andrew Lotz to put Effingham up 14-0. Taylorville would answer right back with a short three yard touchdown run by Thomas Gettings. The TD was all set up by a 35 yard screen pass from Baron Odam to Clark Rahar. Taylorville would miss the extra point to make it 14-6. Then a miss communication by the Hearts, turned into a pick six for Odam to cut the lead to just two. The Tornadoes went for the two point conversion, only for a penalty to back them up and ultimately be unsuccessful. The score remained 14-12.
Unfortunately that would be the last time Taylorville would get any points. Effingham scored the next 34 straight.
Gillum would rush for a couple of scores and Dunston would rush for his second and third rushing TDs of the night. Including breaking off a 47 yarder to make it 41-12.
Effingham scored in multiple ways including an interception return of their own by Logan Jones. Also an impressive 63 yard run by D. J. Latham.
55-12 would end up being the final score.
Effingham improves to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Apollo. Taylorville falls to 3-3 and 0-3 in the Apollo.
Effingham hits the road again to take on the Bulldogs of Mahomet Seymour. Mahomet improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference by winning against Mt. Zion 26-7. Taylorville returns home to host Mattoon.
