Breese Mater Dei traveled to Effingham on Friday night and it would the Knights getting back their winning ways against the Hearts by winning 36-14.
Mater Dei would take the first drive of the game and go right down the field but were forced to settle for a field goal. Markus Keher connected on a 26 yard field goal to put the Knights on top 3-0. Effingham would set the tone for how the night would go for the Hearts, as Effingham turned the ball over on an interception on their first possession. Mater Dei would take advantage of the good field position as QB Trenton Zeeb scrambled 11 yards into the endzone to the make the lead 9-0.
The Knights would take advantage of a turnover on downs and grow the lead even more. Early in the second quarter Zeeb would connect with his favorite target of the night, Garrick Winkeler from one yard out to make it 16-0. Effingham would be forced to punt again and could never get anything going for the majority of the night. Mater Dei scored once more, this time Zeeb connected with Winkeler once again from 24 yards out to take the lead 22-0.
The ensuing possession Effingham finally got something going offensively.
The Hears would finally pick up their first first down of the game with a big run from Weldon Dunston. That would set up a 48 yard touchdown with Gage Gillium airing it out to Andrew Lotz. That would finally get Effingham on the board 22-7. That score would hold until halftime.
The Knights would add on to the lead with a nice return on a punt and a penalty. That would set up Mater Dei to score in four plays, on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Zeeb to tail back Brock Revermann. The score would to make it 29-7. The Hearts looked to get back into it with a Dunston scored on a one yard touchdown, as Effingham took advantage of a Wade Bushur interception. That Effingham score made it 29-14. Mater Dei would put the game out of reach with another TD. Mater Dei took advantage of a fumbled punt return. Zeeb would connect on his 4th passing touchdown of the night this time to Gabe Schlimme.
Breese would go on to win by that final 36-14.
The Knights improve to 2-1 on the season and Effingham falls to 1-2. Hearts look to bounce back in the first Apollo Conference game of the year as they travel to Mattoon next week
