Vandalia, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- After months of discussing the topic and research, the Vandalia School Board on Tuesday night approved of a switch to a 4.3 grading scale for Vandalia High School as well as moving to semester grading periods instead of quarterly grade periods. The move comes after the school board was given a short presentation about a 4.3 grading scale from VCHS Principal Randy Protz during the January school board meeting. Protz explained at that time that he had found that several of the other schools in the South Central Conference have went to a 4.3 grading scale and feels that it is something that would be a benefit all around, for students, teachers and the school. After taking another month for discussion and to wrap up research and discussion on the possible move, the school board unanimously approved to move to a 4.3 grading scale by a 7-0 vote.
Also at the meeting, in another grade related move, the school board approved the move to semester grading periods for Vandalia High School. With the move, there will no longer be first and third quarter report cards, but as explained by Principal Protz last month, that midpoint would be used for more of an academic progress time. The move to the semester grading periods move them in line with how grades and such are used for eligibility and other areas. The measure was also approved by the school board by a vote of 7-0.
These changes will again only be for Vandalia High School while Vandalia Junior High and Vandalia Elementary schools grading periods and grade scales will remain as they are.
