Grace Nelson Breaks School Record; Wins Game Against Newton 50-49

In what was a wild and historic night Altamont defeated Newton 50-49, without ever leading the game.

Newton was in control from the beginning as they led after the first quarter 9-5. Altamont got the offense going in the second quarter to trim the lead to 22-20 at the half. Altamont was out rebounded in the first half 25-7. Altamont also only shot 7/25 from the field and 2/11 from three. Peyton Osteen led the team in scoring at the half with 8 points. Grace Nelson only had 2 points at the half, leaving her 17 points away from breaking the girls’ basketball all time point record.

Newton would limit Altamont to only 8 points in the third quarter but Newton would only score 8 points as well to make it 34-28 entering the final quarter. Grace Nelson took over in the second half and ended up breaking that record by hitting two free throws late in the game. Newton would lead by 2 late in the game but Altamont would draw a foul and make the first shot. The second shot was missed and a rebound was grabbed and Altamont drew a jump ball which gave Altamont possession with just .8 second left in the game. Altamont would inbound the ball from under the basket. Altamont lobbed the ball at the basket and Nelson grabbed it and threw it up as the buzzer sounded but the shot missed. However the officials called a foul. This would send Grace Nelson to the free throw line for two shots with no time left on the clock, down by one. Grace would step up and hit both free throws to give Altamont the win, in a game in which they never led.

Grace would end up leading the team with 21 points, entering the night she needed 19 to break the record and she got that late in the fourth quarter. Altamont is now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the tournament. Altamont will next be in action on Friday when they take on Effingham at 1:30.
