Game of the year! Can only be the way to describe this high school football game. A matchup between these two teams, did you except anything different?
The game started out not looking good for the Hearts as Mt. Zion jumped out to a 13-0 lead. The first score came on a converted 4th down, a 34 yard TD pass from QB Makobi Adams to Jacob Harvey.
Mt Zion would be in control of the game for 75 percent of the 1st half. Then Effingham grabbed all the momentum going into the locker room. Effingham first score came on a six yard TD run by Evan Waymouth culminating a 15 play over 7 minute drive. Hearts second score came one play after the special teams unit got their hand on another punt. The quick 32 TD Pass from Tanner Pontious to a wide open Connor Thompson to give Effingham the lead 14-13 at the break.
Both teams traded scores in the 3rd quarter and it was Effingham with the lead 23-19.
The lead wouldn’t last for long as one play into the final quarter, Mt. Zion would strike for an 83 yard TD pass from Adams to JC Anderson to take the lead 26-23. Each team would trade scores from there. Effingham would have to travel 95 yards to take the lead, thanks in part to a big pass play from Pontious to Caden Walls to set up Pontious sneaking it in to take the lead 30-26. Mt. Zion would take the lead right back on a 10 yard TD run by Adams, set up by a big pass play to Braydon Trimble to make the score 33-30. Effingham would march 66 yards to get into position for a field goal try. Armando Estrada already hitting a school record long field goal earlier this season, so a 35 yard game tying field goal to force overtime was no problem. Here we go into overtime tied 33-33.
In overtime Effingham would get the ball first and be stopped but ol reliable showed up once again. Estrada nailed a 21 yard field goal to give the Hearts the lead 36-33. Mt Zion though would get into the endzone on the second play of their possession, a 10 yard TD pass from Adams to Grant Mcatee for the game winner 39-36 final.
Mt. Zion improves to 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Apollo. Effingham takes the loss on homecoming dropping to 3-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Apollo. Hearts ago on the road to take on Lincoln next week.
