The Illinois State Police recently issued a warning regarding a new phone scam that is circulating Illinois.
According to the Illinois State Police, many residents have been receiving a phone call from an individual that will claim to be associated with the Illinois State Police. This person then asks the resident for a donation for an officer that has passed away in the line of duty. The Illinois State Police stated that the number most often associated with this call is (312) 789-5176. However, they also state that scammers have the ability to quickly change the numbers that show up on caller id. They are also reminding residents that they would never solicit money or ask anyone to send money to department.
The Illinois State Police is urging all residents to be wary of phone calls that are soliciting money, especially if the caller is pushy or threatening. If you feel that you have been a victim of this scam, call 1-800-243-0618 to report it to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General, or visit www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/consumers/phonescams or www.consumer.ftc.gov/scam-alerts.
