Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- On September 19th and 20th, the Knights of Columbus, families and friends of Effingham Council 665 will take to the streets for the annual Knights of Columbus Intellectual Disabilities Fund Drive, also known as the “Tootsie Roll” Drive. The statewide K of C “Tootsie Roll” Drive is in its 54th year.
All the funds collected locally are initially submitted to Illinois State Council K of C Charities Inc. – a 501c-3 not for profit. However, Councils request 90% of the funds to be returned / sent to help local organizations who work and support those with Intellectual Disabilities. The 10% the Illinois State Council retains is used to support Illinois Special Olympics as well as Knights of Columbus group homes throughout the State. One of these homes is located in Effingham.
The local organizations Council 665 requests funding for goes to many entities. The list may change slightly but last year’s local recipients included SEARCH, ARC Community Support Systems, E.A.S.T.E.R., Inclusion Awareness for Handicapped, Ballard Family Nature Center and Special Education programs at Effingham Unit 40 Schools, St. Anthony Grade and High Schools and Sacred Heart Grade School.
So, if you see our volunteers on the street or in front of a business please consider a donation of any amount. The pocket change really adds up and please know that your donation is helping people in our community.
