Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- An incident involving a home invasion and a standoff with police occurred at the 200 Block of Smith Street in Teutopolis Saturday.
Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns says that an individual broke into a neighbor’s home through the back door mid morning Saturday and barricaded himself inside their home. The residents, who were in bed at the time, were able to escape out the front door unharmed.
Local police responded to the incident shortly thereafter, and after a standoff with police, officers made entry into the home around 2:20pm and the individual was taken into custody. No one was hurt in this incident.
Police on the scene said weapons were found in the individual’s apartment, and police suspect the individual may have had a mental crisis. The investigation is ongoing.
Responding agencies included the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, Effingham City Police Department and Illinois State Police Troop 7.
Sheriff Kuhns stated that he is “very grateful and pleased with how well all agencies worked together.”
UPDATE: The individual has been named as Jon M. Dust, 37. He has been charged with criminal trespass to residence.
