Effingham closed out the “weird” “unusual” season with a perfect 5-0 record after making the long road trip to Lincoln and coming home with the 43-6 win. But it was not without overcoming some adversity. As this week we learned that senior QB Nate Thompson was going to be out with a broken hand, suffered last week against Mt. Zion. So that meant that 6’0 junior Noah Jones got the start and well his night did not start out the way you would want it too. On his first pass attempt of the season and his varsity career Jones threw an interception but I would say Jones and the Hearts rebounded nicely.
Effingham would get the ball back and they were off and running literally. In a flash the duo of Chase Woomer and Trevor Donsbach carried the ball down the field, to get the Hearts on the board first.
Rinse and repeat the previous drive including Donsbach carrying the ball into the endzone for the second time in the opening quarter.
Effingham has gotten on the board in a variety of ways this season and add a couple more to list on this night. As first it was a safety to make it 16-0. Then on the very first play after receiving the free kick, it was a brother to brother connection, this time it was Parker Wolfe to Garrett Wolfe for a 50 yard connection to make it 22-0.
And END FIRST QUARTER. (Breathes)
The scoring barrage would continue for the Hearts. On the very first play of the second quarter, Donsbach ran 86 yards to the endzone for his third score of the game to make it 29-0. If you are scoring at home, that’s three touches, three carries for Donsbach, three touchdowns.
Jones would find Tristian Duncan with a 34 yard touchdown pass for Jones first varsity career touchdown pass For Duncan it was not his first time visiting the end zone. Tristian only adds to his receiving legacy at EHS, holding virtually ever single receiving record. Woomer would add one touchdown of his own to make it 43-0 by halftime.
Hearts would not need anything else from there. Lincoln would finally get on the scoreboard in the final quarter with a 86 yard touchdown pass from Elijah Pollice to Scotty Battin to make it a 43-6 final.
I’ve talked a lot about the offense but the defense deserves credit too (all season long really). Zac Slifer and Austin Herboth both had two sacks each and London Rinkel got an interception.
No need to dwell on the what ifs scenarios, like what if we had more season left. The Hearts didn’t lose any of the games that they got the opportunity to play and won a conference championships. The seniors also left their mark and left a legacy that won’t soon be forgotten for everything they have done for the program.
