MATTOON, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Renowned classical guitarist Peter Fletcher will be performing a free concert at 7 p.m. Friday (April 20, 2018) on the first floor of the Mattoon Public Library.
Based in Brooklyn and Detroit, Fletcher travels across the country, sharing his passion with audiences in communities large and small.
His solo recital earlier this year at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York was well received by William Gooch for Fashion Reverie:
“As a mature artist, Fletcher stands out in his emotional interpretation of the works he performs. And this is particularly apparent in the less pyrotechnical pieces in his repertoire. Though the more virtuosic works get pulses racing, the gentler works give room for reflection and in Fletcher’s corner demonstrate more accurately his craft and technical nuance. This is good calculated move on Fletcher’s part!!”
Fletcher’s musical repertoire features selections from the Renaissance Period through the 20th century.
He began playing at a young age, under the guidance of classical guitarist John Sutherland, and made his debut at age 15.
He received a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and has been the recipient of many awards and accolades from the school.
The performance is sponsored by the Mattoon Arts Council and the library, for which the concert is part of its event series.
Coffee and cookies will be provided after the concert.
“This is part of the library’s initiative to be an active participant in providing meaningful and enjoyable materials and programs,” said library director Carl Walworth.
“Programs like this one are consistent with our board’s vision for the library to spark ideas, enrich lives and strengthen community.”
The event series features a variety of topics.
It’s included programs that range from religions of the world to a session on how to enhance your lawn.
The next event is on May 6 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. when the library opens its doors to its updated archive/local history room, its enhanced first floor reading area and recognizes 50 years of LSC Communications/RR Donnelley’s presence in Mattoon with a 3 p.m. program on the company’s Lakeside Classic books.
