***Press Release***
(Salem, IL) Today I, Thadeus J Freed, Salem resident, and Libertarian Precinct Committeeman announce my intention to seek the Libertarian Party of Illinois’ nomination for the 107th State Representative seat, in hopes of breaking the two party system and being a better voice for the hard working people of this district.
In his Farewell Address, George Washington warned Americans, “However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enable to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”
Washington was not alone in his dread of political parties becoming more powerful than the will of the people, many iconic American leaders and thinkers have decried a two party system. Today in our state the results of such a system are too clear. It is my goal to bring not only more choice to the people of the 107th district, but a better choice: a choice for smaller and more accountable government and for freer and more prosperous markets. I believe people and business flourish best when not bled dry through taxation, or micromanaged by bureaucrats. I believe that those elected to serve the people should be open and transparent, willingly explaining any vote they cast or legislation they draft or sponsor.
“Republicans and Democrats stood together to enact a bipartisan balanced budget and end a destructive 736-day impasse. The people in the chamber did not do what was easy today. But we did what was right for the future of our state.” – Speaker Madigan, July 6, 2017
Spearheaded by Speaker Madigan, the Illinois General Assembly passed a widely unpopular budget that was dependent on a thirty-two percent increase to the personal income tax, and did nothing to curtail overspending, or address concerns over how the state spends money. The very next month our schools were in danger of closing due to lack of funding despite this substantial tax hike, as much of that money was spoken for in a bloated spending bill, and nearly all of the remainder was earmarked for generating new bonds; which in turn are to by used to pay down outstanding debt and past due bills. The actions taken over the past two years by the General Assembly show a clear disconnect between themselves and their constituents.
I and my fellow Libertarians want all Illinoisans to enjoy more freedom, and choices. The people of this district deserve a representative they can count on to support fiscally responsible policies, that will foster growth and economic prosperity. It is my belief that the answers to the woes of our state begin with shrinking the government in Springfield and making it more accountable to the people. A smaller government can run leaner, leaving more of your earnings where they belong: in your pocket. A smaller government where there are far fewer places for corruption to hide. I want to work with other lawmakers to reduce the cost of running our state: I would never support an unbalanced budget. I want the children in the 107th district to have properly funded and highly rated schools to attend. I want entrepreneurs to open up new businesses in our district. I want the 107th district to be the spot where existing businesses choose to expand or relocate to. Finally, I want to stop ruining the lives of people who have committed nonviolent crimes in which there is no victim. Ultimately, I want to work to make our district an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family.
