A Christmas tree recycling program will be held in Shelbyville and Sullivan from December 26th to February 15th.
Christmas trees that are brought to the designated sites will be used by the Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Discarded trees will be bundled together into small groups and will be submerged into Lake Shelbyville. These trees will then provide multiple locations for fish to use for breeding areas, as well as a cover for escape from predators. As new trees are added to the lake each year, this recycling program proves to be helpful to fisheries and anglers.
Two collection sites are going to be set in Shelbyville and Sullivan. The designated area for Shelbyville is at the Johnstown Mall. Donated trees are to be placed inside the snow fence area at the Northwest corner of the parking area, in the grassy area. The collection site for Sullivan is at Howy’s Lake Side Gas Station. Trees are to be placed in the snow fence area on the north side of the building. Trees are not to be placed in the parking lot for either site. Donated trees must be clear of any stands, tinsel, ornaments, and plastic bags before being donated. No other types of tree trimmings, wreaths, flowers, or yard waste will be accepted.
