Garry Eugene Courtney, Jr., 48, of Cowden, Illinois, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Garry was born on September 23, 1978, in Effingham, to Garry Courtney, Sr. and Tonya (Hovis) Cathey. He was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan, a Kansas City Chiefs fan, an avid fisherman and he loved being in the outdoors.
He is survived by his children, Scott Courtney, Kayla Courtney and Anthony Grove; brothers, Phil Courtney and Kenny Cathey; sisters, Jennifer Cathey and Rebecca (John) Wagner, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Kenny Cathey, Sr.; sister, Stephanie Newton; grandmother, Rose Williams; nephew, Jackson Wagner, and niece, Chloe West.
A celebration of life will be held at Holland Church, Beecher City, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026. A meal will follow at the Cowden Community Building.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness or the donor’s choice and may be mailed to 302 W. Main St., Shelbyville, IL 62565. Lockart-Green Funeral Home of Cowden is assisting the family.
