
Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- On Friday August 8, 2026 at approximately 4:19 am, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on I-57 southbound, approximately 3 miles south of Effingham. Officers arrived and found a female deceased in the vehicle. She was identified as Alyashailyassa Muhammad, age 20 of Dewey, Illinois in rural Champaign County.
Coroner Kim Rhodes and Deputy Coroner Lauren Heuerman responded to the scene.
Preliminary information indicated Alyashailyassa Muhammed was traveling southbound on I-57 and lost control on the wet roadway and struck the guardrail. There was a very heavy rainfall in that area just prior to the crash.
Family members were contacted and advised she was heading to Atlanta, Georgia.
Medical records were requested and toxicology samples were obtained by the coroner’s office. These results should be available in about three weeks.
Agencies on scene were: Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, Rural Med EMS, Effingham and Watson Fire Departments and Illinois Department of Transportation.
The case remains under investigation by the Effingham County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police.
