Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham County Airport Commission received a mixed update Wednesday. A ribbon cutting for the east-west runway extension is scheduled for 11 a.m. August 20th. Officials say the longer runway will make it possible for larger aircraft to use the airport, marking a major step forward.
However, the new hangar building remains unfinished. The project is now 58 days past its scheduled completion date, and commissioners plan to ask the County Board to pursue liquidated damages of roughly 73-thousand dollars.
Chairman Ken Wohltman said the delay is also costing the county rental revenue, while Airport Manager Jerry Tate said tenants are eager to move in. Commissioners also reviewed plans for an apron expansion, a shop lease, and next year’s budget. The Commission also looked at getting a 12k gallon fuel tank, but the state maximum for a fuel tank at airports is 10k gallons. However, other airports have expressed interest in teaming up with the Effingham County Regional Airport to try to change the existing law.
