Coles County, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Illinois State Police Troop 7 responded early Thursday morning to a significant collision on Interstate 57 southbound at milepost 185 in Coles County. The crash, which happened around 8:35 a.m., involved three semi-trailer trucks and two passenger vehicles. Upon arrival, officers found multiple vehicles engulfed in flames, complicating rescue efforts. First responders reported several injuries, and tragically, one person died at the scene. The incident forced officials to shut down southbound lanes for multiple hours and divert traffic at milepost 192.
Crews spent several hours extinguishing fires and removing debris. Investigators continue to work on determining the cause of this multi-vehicle collision.
