Springfield, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The dangerous anhydrous incident outside Teutopolis last year showed just how much our local firefighters and first responders do to help our community. Because of their bravery, the Office of the State Fire Marshal is recognizing multiple firefighters who helped with the incident at Tuesday’s 31st Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service and Medal of Honor Ceremony.
Five local firefighters will be awarded the Medal of Honor, three from the Teutopolis Fire Protection District and two from the Montrose Fire Protection District. Those being recognized include:
- Lieutenant Brett Repking (Teutopolis FPD)
- Ryan Lee (Teutopolis FPD)
- Dan Kocher (Teutopolis FPD)
- Assistant Fire Chief David Browning (Montrose FPD)
- Captain Drew Pals (Montrose FPD)
The Medal of Honor is the highest award given by the State of Illinois to a firefighter for an act of outstanding bravery or heroism, by which the firefighter has demonstrated in great degree the characteristics of selflessness and personal courage above and beyond the call of duty, under adverse conditions, with the possibility of extreme personal risk.
The ceremony will be held on May 14th beginning at 10am on the State Capitol Lawn, southwest corner on Statue Row. Afterwards, the ceremony will reconvene at the Bank of Springfield Center.
