Altamont continued regional play on Wednesday traveling over to Nokomis. As it was a battle of the Indians versus Carlyle to determine who would go to the regional championship. Just like earlier this season in the matchup of these two squads, Altamont came away with the victory and marches on.
Altamont and in particularly Mason Robinson started out the game scoring the first seven points, setting the tone for the rest of the night. Off of the timeout by Coach Palmer , Carlyle turned the ball over and Avery Jahraus would connect on his first three to make it 10-0 Altamont. Carlyle would finally get on the board with a long two, only for Robinson answer back with a three for his tenth point of the opening quarter. The trey made it it 13-2. Late in the first quarter Wyatt Phillips would connect from deep to make it 21-8 lead. Wyatt Nothaus for Carlyle would bank in a three at the buzzer to make it 21-11 after one.
Altamont and Robinson would continue pouring in the points in the second. As a Mason layup connected for his 12th point of the first half to make it 27-14. Late in the quarter Logan Corrnett would finish a layup around a couple of defenders to make it 31-14. Carlyle was led by 6’7 sophomore Matthew Guthrie in the first half. Guthrie had five points and a couple of blocks. The score was 32-16 in Altamont favor at halftime.
Carlyle started out the second half scoring the first five points off a three pointer from Sam Ruscher and a tip in by Guthrie to make the score 32-21. Carlyle would get a put back from Hayden Huels to cut the lead to 34-25. Immediately after though, Jarhaus would answer with a three to give Altamont the 12 point lead again. A few minutes later another made three from Jarhaus made it 40-25. Dillon Elam would also knock down a three pointer, burring the defense for double teaming, to make it 44-28. Carlyle would end the quarter on a good note as they closed the gap back to 44-33 after three.
Ruscher would connect on three triples and Guthrie would score nine all in the second half. But another triple for Robinson, four points from Cornett and another basket for Eric Kollman would end Carlyle’s season as the final was 62-28.
Altamont improves to 27-4 on the season and advances to the regional championship game on Friday at 7:00 P.M. The Indians will meet with the host school Nokomis who was victorious over SEB 56-37. This is a rematch from Feb 3rd as Altamont came from behind to win 53-49 in the same building.
