Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham Board of Education went over numerous things for the upcoming school year.
The board discussed the FY23 tentative budget, projections of $428,000 in deficit spending in the Education Fund, a $337,000 deficit in the Operations and Maintenance Fund, a $224,000 deficit in the Transportation Fund, and $427,000 deficit in the Working Cash Fund.
Board President Robin Klosterman asked about upgrades to the library system in the district, and if funding for library updates are included in the budget. Assistant Superintendent Jason Fox said an increase in spending are planned. He also said each school in the district will have a library room, minus the Early Learning Center, where there is just no extra space for a library room. At this time, ELC has books available in the classrooms in a limited fashion, and Fox said that is ok, since most students attending ELC learn to read as the year goes along. He said making sure kindergarten and elementary school libraries should be filled with more books to help expand on their reading choices.
Fox pointed out that most of the time funding budgeted for is not used fully, meaning there will likely be money left over after the fiscal year.
The board voted to approve KCH Mechanical’s bid for installation of hoods in the high school welding shop at a cost of just over $14,000, and also voted to purchase 9 new school buses to maintain the district’s 5-year lease schedule. Fox said anticipated delivery date of the buses is 13 months. The board also allocated up to $60,000 for the purchase of a used maintenance truck as opposed to new, which cost significantly more, and awarded the bid for fuel to South Central FS.
