Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- The second round of repairs on the Effingham County Office Building elevator is expected to start during the week of the Memorial Day holiday, Effingham County Sheriff Chief Deputy Paul Kuhns said.
Earlier this year, Effingham County hired a contractor to replace much of the power system, but not the passenger car. The elevator has run on an aging mechanical system for decades and some breakdowns occurred briefly last year. The elevator broke down about two years and replacing an old part and other necessary work had the elevator out of service for a few months.
Kuhns said the contractor hired this time expects to complete the work within a few weeks. Effingham County officials will offer service on the ground floor of the County Office Building, located at the corner of Fourth Street and Jefferson Avenue, to citizens unable to climb stairs in the four-story structure, which once housed the Benwood Hotel.
