The Cubs scored two runs in the first on a Rizzo RBI single and a Zobrist sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals got a run in the third on a throwing error by Zobrist to make it 2-1. The Cubs added a run in the sixth on a Rizzo RBI single to make it 3-1. The Cardinals came back with five runs in the eighth on a Piscotty three run home run, a Moss solo home run and a Grichuk RBI double to make it 6-3. The Cubs got a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Rizzo solo home run to make it 6-4.
Neither starting pitch got the decision. Cardinals starter Leake gave up 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1 over 6 innings. Bowman got the win in relief. Cubs starter Lackey gave up 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1 over 6 and 2/3 innings. Lackey left the game in the seventh with an arm injury. Rondón took the loss in relief.
