FUNKHOUSER, IL -(Effingham Radio)- Earlier today, at approximately 12:30 p.m., first responders were called to a home near 10222 Route 40 just outside of Funkhouser for a structure fire.
Upon arrival they found the home along with a nearby shed engulfed in flames.
According to Battalion Chief John Paholke, the homeowner was burning leaves near the home when the fire lost control, and reached the house.
Before the fire reached the home it was picked up by the wind headed towards the nearby railroad tracks.
Paholke added that no one was living in the home when it caught fire.
As first responders worked to extinguish the flames, they controlled traffic on route 40 as well as shutting down the nearby railroad until the fire was gone.
The total damage to the home ranged between $60,000- $80,000.
Departments involved included Effingham FD, Shumway FD, Beecher City FD, Stewardson FD, Watson FD, and Altamont assisted in covering other stations.
Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, and Abbott EMS were also on scene.
There were no reported injuries at the time of the incident.
