Three schools in Charleston were placed on “Lock-down” today for reports of an individual with a gun being located near the schools.
According to Charleston CUSD#1 Superintendent, Jim Littleford, at 2:00pm the schools received an alert from the 911 call center that an individual had been spotted near Charleston High School with a gun. Following the schools’ emergency procedures, Charleston High School, Charleston Middle School, and Mark Twain Elementary were put on “lock-down”. Charleston Police Department and Eastern Illinois University Police Department responded to the area and investigated. Following sweeps of the area, the police determined that there was no threat to the schools and the “lock-down” was lifted at 2:35pm.
