Mayor Jeff Bloemker recently proclaimed April 22, 2016 “Earth Day.” Over one billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
“I was a student at the old Central Junior High School back in the early 1970’s when Earth Day first started,” said Mayor Bloemker. So, it’s fun for me to be able to go to Effingham Junior High to recognize Earth Day. I recall those early efforts to publicize and promote Earth Day. I remember most of us thought cleaning up the Earth was a pretty big job. But 40+ years later we’ve made great progress. Of course, we still have a lot of work to do. One thing I would ask of the citizens of Effingham is to not litter. And to even take it up a notch and pick up litter if and when you can. We need to make the Earth and Effingham look good. Thank you!”
