Virginia Clare “Jean” Habing, 82, of Teutopolis, IL, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.
A memorial mass will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. A private family burial will be held in St. Francis Cemetery in Teutopolis at a later date.
Jean was born on July 19, 1943, in Effingham, the daughter of Martin and Clara (Pals) Feldhake. She married Mark Habing on April 25, 1970, and he survives.
A 1961 graduate of St Anthony High School, Jean began her adult life by entering the Ursuline Sisters of Belleville. After concluding her time in the convent in 1968, she pursued her passion for helping others and graduated from Marillac College in 1969 with a degree in social work. Jean worked with Birthright and Catholic Charities, where she found joy in helping foster children and assisting with adoptions. She was very active in her faith with St. Francis Catholic Church, where she devoted her time with RCIA, religious education, and as a Eucharistic minister. For the last couple of years, Jean also volunteered at Willowbrook Memory Care and as a local election judge.
Jean enjoyed quilting and made a large number of quilts over the years, which are cherished by family and friends. She valued time with her grandchildren and loved being a part of their lives. She also enjoyed camping, hiking, and spending time outdoors.
Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years, Mark Habing of Teutopolis; four children, Christy (Shane) Barrington of Maryville, IL, Ben (Jamie Niemerg) Habing of Teutopolis, John (Melissa Gillock) Habing of Teutopolis, and Greg (Amy Sultenfuss) of Columbus, OH; thirteen grandchildren, Marshall (Stephanie Shan) Barrington, Marissa (significant other, Abraham Stacy) Barrington; Maddy, Martin, Chris, and Sarah Habing, Anabelle, Katherine, Jolene, and Joseph Habing, and Ella, Grace, and Samantha Habing; one great-grand-daughter, Valerie Stacy; siblings, Margie (Ray, deceased) Kaufman of Sigel, IL, Evelyn (Ron) Weber of Collinsville, IL, Jim (Susan) Feldhake of Effingham, IL, and Dorothy (Tom) Zumbahlen of Effingham, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Clara Feldhake; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Christine Habing; and infant daughter, Jennifer Lea.
