Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The closure of a LGBTQ-plus mental health hotline is drawing bipartisan criticism from lawmakers and mental health advocates.
The specialized LGBTQ-plus hotline, 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, launched in 2022 and shut down on Thursday following a directive from the Trump administration seeking to eliminate resources for diversity, equity and inclusion programs. The hotline offered targeted support for individuals in crisis and fielded more than one-point-two million calls, texts, and chats since its debut.
Lawmakers have sent a letter urging HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to immediately reverse the shutdown.
