Springfield, IL-(Effingham Radio)- A federal judge has sentenced former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan to 7.5 years in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of $2.5 million.
Judge John Robert Blakey sentenced Madigan Friday after a jury convicted the ex-speaker in February on ten counts of corruption.
University of Illinois professor Brian Gaines noted that Madigan’s bribery-related benefits to ComEd were estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars.
Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie said you can’t put a number on Madigan’s cost to citizens.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Streicker said Madigan’s actions involved “huge pieces of legislation that affected everyone in the state.”
