Shelbyville, IL-(Effingham Radio)- It is with deep sadness that on behalf of the Shelby County Board, I share that Shelby County Coroner Brad Phegley passed away Friday, December 7th, 2024. Mr. Phegley served Shelby County for the last 12 years, beginning his service as Chief Deputy Coroner for eight years, winning his first election for Shelby County Coroner in 2020, and his second election in 2024. His service to the county and his compassion to the families of Shelby County are a huge part of his legacy as a public servant and man of compassion.
I have communicated with members of Mr. Phegley’s family to share with them my condolences as well as offer my support to them and any needs they may have. Mr. Phegley was deeply loved by his family, and I have vowed that the Shelby County Board will promote and secure his commitment to service as a part of his legacy.
Since Friday afternoon, I have been in contact with Sheriff Brian McReynolds, State’s Attorney Ruth Woolery, Shelby County Clerk Jessica Fox, and Vice Chair Teresa Boehm. I appreciate the open communication, dedication, and willingness to work together from all four of these people as we navigate how to best serve the needs of the county.
I want to extend my appreciation to Moultrie County Coroner Lynn Reed for his seasoned expertise and advice. Mr. Reed agreed to assist Shelby County through the weekend and use his contacts to provide us guidance on how to continue services to Shelby County as we plan for short-term and long-term solutions for the residents of Shelby County. Mr. Reed’s assistance and expertise is another example of neighbors helping neighbors, and I appreciate all he has done and will continue to do.
I will be working with everyone listed above Monday to navigate our path forward with compassion, respect, and necessity.
Tad A. Mayhall
Chairman, Shelby County Board
