WHAT:
- Two Unit Personal Injury Traffic Crash
WHERE:
- Interstate 57 southbound near milepost 221, Champaign County
WHEN:
- Apr. 8, 2021 at approximately 1:00 a.m.
VEHICLES:
- Unit 1- 2008 Kia Sedan
- Unit 2- 2020 Freightliner Truck-Tractor Semi-Trailer Combination
DRIVERS:
- Unit 1- Trinity Barnes, 26-year-old female from Monticello, IL – Transported by ambulance to an area hospital with life threatening injuries.
- Unit 2- Janet Brooks, 62-year-old female from Mohawk, TN
PASSENGER:
- Unit 2- Gary Sessoms, 62-year-old male from Bennettsville, SC
PRELIMINARY:
- Preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling south on Interstate 57 near milepost 221 in Champaign County. Unit 1 driver slowed speed and pulled to the right shoulder. Unit 2 was traveling south at the same location and moved to the left lane while approaching Unit 1. For unknown reasons, the driver of Unit 1 pulled back into the roadway and into the path of Unit 2. Unit 2 struck the driver side of Unit 1. The driver of Unit 1 was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both the driver and passenger of Unit 2 reported no injuries. This crash is still under investigation and no further information is available.
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
